The WISE Prize is the flagship award of the World Innovation Summit for Education, recognizing projects that are innovative, impactful, and scalable. Each year, finalists receive mentorship, capacity-building support, and funding, with one project awarded a $1 million prize at the WISE Summit.
Among the six finalists for 2024–2025 is TUMO’s AI curriculum, featuring an AI co-learner platform. Students consolidate newly acquired concepts by helping the co-learner master them. The co-learner points out and demonstrates possible improvements in the student’s work. And before attempting a task, students can watch the co-learner perform it. The model makes AI-supported learning active, creative, and personal.
Alongside the AI co-learner, TUMO has been developing its fourteenth focus area: GenAI. With support from WISE, TUMO ran pilot workshops in Beirut and Mumbai that introduced students to elements of the new GenAI focus area. Teens experimented with storytelling, chatbot design, and multimodal publishing.
“One of the key challenges the WISE Prize aims to address is the implications of the emergence of AI in education. TUMO’s solution approaches the use of AI both as a learning objective and as a means to help students achieve that goal. This speaks to the core of our mission of supporting innovation that can enhance pedagogical practices from within.” – Aurélio Amaral, Director of Programs, WISE
“What has struck me and been most amazing about our journey with TUMO is how they are using AI not as a replacement but as a bridge. With inclusivity at the core of their design, making world-class learning free and accessible to young people everywhere. At the same time, they remain grounded in the power of in-person connection, ensuring that technology amplifies curiosity and creativity among students rather than replacing it.” – Sreya Bhattacharya, Associate Partner, Dalberg Advisors
Following the pilot workshops, TUMO is launching its GenAI focus area on October 1. Students will dive into self-learning activities, workshops, and learning labs enriched with AI components, where teens can create with AI as well as create AI. At the same time, AI is being integrated across all TUMO focus areas, ensuring students build the skills and literacy they need to thrive in the AI era. Through that process, they are becoming AI superlearners, capable of mastering new tools and technologies as they emerge.
“Being a WISE Prize finalist has accelerated the development of TUMO’s AI capabilities and greatly increased our ability to impact learners on a very large scale,” said Vahakn Papazian, TUMO’s Director of Product Engineering. “It’s essential to empower young people to take part in innovation ecosystems and engage with AI on their own terms.”
From 427 applications, the WISE jury selected six programs that best address urgent global education challenges. These ranged from foundational literacy to AI-powered tools, inclusive learning models, and teacher development, with TUMO’s project recognized among them for its innovative approach to AI education.
